“Why should I hire a DJ?”

Considering the variety of wedding service providers and vendors you will speak too when planning your wedding, this is an important question to ask. The answer comes down to your preferences. Think about your answers to the following:

How much money is in my budget for the entertainment?
How much variety is there in the musical tastes of my guests?
What are MY music preferences?
How much time do I have to audition various bands?
What can I get as an extra from the band?

Now that you’ve considered your own answers to the above, consider this. It’s estimated that entertainment for a wedding is usually budgeted at $1,000 for about four hours of work. Some providers are willing to negotiate, offer discounts, or throw in extra services, like lighting equipment or a custom CD of your wedding songs. But don’t base your decision solely on price. Considering how much money you are spending on your wedding in total, you want to make sure you have good entertainment for your guests.

Many people may turn to their friends or family to act as their DJ, and have had tragic results. For example, June* had her cousin fill in as the DJ for her beach-side wedding. She paid for the rental of the equipment, plus his time. He showed up to the wedding with a CD changer and an iPod, set the iPod to a playlist and walked away to enjoy the reception and drink. June* had to find, download, and burn a CD of her chosen wedding songs for him, doing all of the work!

A good DJ will have the songs you want played for the special dances readily available. They will also know exactly when you want these to play, in what order and will help by reminding you to hit the dance floor at those times. This leaves you with little to do other than visit with your guests.

You and your guests probably have a broad range of musical tastes. Make sure you sit down with your DJ to talk about how you want music requests handled at your wedding. The last thing you want is for your cousins to begin changing the style of music that you have chosen. On the other hand, if you don’t mind the DJ playing requests from your guests, ask if how big their selection of music will be, and that it will be available at your wedding. Just because the DJ has 90,000 songs on their computer, doesn’t mean that they will have all 90,000 songs there!

If you’re thinking that you want a band to play your wedding, consider the amount of time you will need to spend driving and listening to auditions. Is that time you could be spent relaxing in the midst of all your wedding planning? You have enough details to attend to – why give yourself more work to do?
